About Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a hot topic in both the specialist and the general media, not least because IT (and the Web in particular) offers students more opportunities to plagiarise than ever before.

In response, most UK universities have installed and are now using detection software, such as Turnitin. There is no doubt that institutions take plagiarism seriously because clearly if it is allowed to go unpunished, it will undermine academic standards.

However, we contend that detection and deterrence are only part of an overall solution which needs to (but does not always) include extensive support for students so that they cannot reasonably claim: "But I didn't know it was wrong!"

PLATO fits into this picture as an e-learning resource which you can make available to your students via your VLE (Blackboard, Moodle, WebCT, etc). It can be used in a number of ways, at a course or institutional level:
  • as part of an induction activity;
  • as a pre-assessment activity;
  • as a preparatory activity for classroom discussion on plagiarism;
  • as a remedial activity following assessment;
  • or as a required activity following an incident of plagiarism.
